Open Position
Technical Lead – Graphitization & Carbon Materials Processing
Company: Terrion, a PTX subsidiary
Location: Frederick, MD
Responsibilities
Supports the PTX/Terrion Chief Technology Officer (CTO) across all technical workstreams related to modified carbon production, high-temperature graphitization, and downstream powder/block processing; develops and refines process parameters, operating envelopes, and material property targets; authors and executes test plans; interprets characterization data; provides technical input to FEED, equipment selection, commissioning, and pilot-operations troubleshooting; ensures all circuits meet performance, safety, and quality requirements.
Experience / Capabilities
Deep expertise in graphitization science, carbon material transformation mechanisms, and high-temperature furnace operations; hands-on experience with thermal treatment, purification pathways, and structure-property relationships for synthetic graphite; capable of translating laboratory findings into pilot-scale process conditions; familiarity with material characterization (XRD, Raman, GDMS, SEM), precursor conditioning, carbon morphology control, and anode-grade performance requirements; ability to collaborate across system engineering, operations, and QA.
Years of Experience
7–10+ years in carbon materials, graphitization, or high-temperature process development; pilot or industrial operations experience strongly preferred.
Education Requirements
Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in materials science, chemical engineering, mechanical engineering, or related field; PhD preferred for advanced carbon-science roles.
Culture & Operating Environment
Terrion is an early-stage operating company, and success in this role requires a high degree of independence, initiative, and personal accountability. Team members are expected to function as self-starters who require minimal supervision, take full ownership of their responsibilities, and proactively drive work forward in an environment where processes, infrastructure, and teams are still being built. This is a hands-on role suited to individuals who are comfortable making sound technical and operational decisions with evolving information, adapting quickly as conditions evolve, and contributing beyond their formal scope to help build both a new capability and a new business, while maintaining discipline around safety, quality, and execution rigor.
